Team Springboard Coventry Food Growing Network (now the Harvest Hub) in January 2020 to increase the supply of fresh fruit and vegetables handed out by the food banks, along with a drive to ensure that surplus food is not wasted and instead directed to those that need it most whilst keeping our carbon footprint to a minimum.
The group has gathered momentum to reach nearly 200 growers, of whom some grow at home and others at an allotment.
The network is an active and inclusive community of people with all levels of experience, from seasoned veterans to those who are new to growing. The group provides a forum for everyone to share advice, hints and tips, while also acting as a coordination point for the collection and distribution of surplus food.
We currently collect surplus fresh food from 20% of members and by the spring of 2021 we hope to have 50 active growers providing food into the network. SIGN UP USING THE FORM BELOW ⬇️⬇️⬇️
Our aim is to identify as many people as possible with the goal of working together to:
• Share resources, tools, seeds & plants
• Facilitate the exchange of ideas & advice
• Provide support for new & established growers
• Support the set up of new community growing spaces
• Ensure no surplus food is wasted by getting it to local foodbanks and community supermarkets
• Build a sustainable local supply chain to get locally grown produce into local businesses and shops
• Promote locally grown, sustainable food in Coventry
During 2020 we donated more than 75 crates of fresh food to individuals and organisations across the city including the church foodbanks, Foleshill Community Centre's Social Supermarket, Carriers of Hope and Valley House.
We also provided tools and seeds to 10 people who were accessing food bank services to get them started on growing their own food at home.
We worked with Feeding Coventry to design and build the community garden at Foleshill Community Centre's Social Supermarket. This has been very successful and has become a thriving community space.
