News from Zen
In the garden everything is coming to life. We have two new (to us) greenhouses (thanks for the help from Vic James, secretary of the allotment society and David) and the plants are growing like mad.
Our regular volunteers as ever have worked hard to get the job done. We had a half day of help from a group of volunteers who work at NESO as well. Rhubarb is going crazy and we have put in potatoes, broad beans are growing and tomatoes are growing well and we are going to put in peas as well.
There are loads of bees and ladybirds and the apple trees are blossoming.
Cathedral event
Team Springboard is going to have a stand at the Spring Festival at Coventry Cathedral on Saturday May 2 from 12 noon to 5pm.
It’s chance to tell people about what we do and find new supporters and volunteers. Drop in if you can.
New directors joining Team Springboard CICTeam Springboard CIC has two new directors. Debbie Jones and Chandra Sekar have joined the board of directors to help steer Team Springboard CIC at strategic level. Team Springboard director is an unpaid role.
Coventry General Charity
A big thank you to the Coventry General Charity for a recent grant. This will help us with everyday essential costs such as keeping the van on the road and keeping the website on the web. It’s the second time the charity has supported us - last time they paid for the shed.
Team Springboard is 12.
Team Springboard CIC turns 12 this year! The organisation was founded in 2014, starting out in Stoke Aldermoor before moving to the current site at the Lake View Allotments in Allesley Park.
School Food Matters
Team Springboard is currently running gardening sessions in five Coventry primary schools on contract to national charity School Food Matters. Team Springboard horticultural manager has been sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm. Pupils are really enthusiastic. They’re asking for more gardening lessons and even how to become a gardening teacher. The pupils will be selling their produce in Coventry city centre. Please come along and support them if you can. The place and date will be announced.
Water conservation
The Lake View Allotment Society is encouraging water conservation and at Team Springboard we’re already doing it. The white tank beside the largest shed and the various water butts around the community garden minimise the need to use the tap. The taps are only on in late spring, summer and early autumn anyway.
Interesting fact: the Lake View Allotment water supply is on a water meter. The water bill is £1,500 a year. That’s 35 per cent of the amount collected in allotment rent.
